“This is historical to be the first robot in the world to be recognized with a citizenship,” – Sophia
According to an official Saudi press release, Sophia was confirmed as the first robot Saudi citizen during a business event in Riyadh.
As I wrote in a previous article, Sophia was also the first robot in the world to be granted a visa (an electronic one at that) when she visited Azerbaijan earlier in the year.
Criticised for having more rights than most women in Saudi Arabia, I wonder what else Sophia will go on to be the first to do as an Artificial Intelligent Robot. She is also the first robot to receive a credit card.
Earlier this month, Sophia appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon
Debuting not only the fact that she can sing, performing a beautiful duet of “Say Something”, by A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera, with Jimmy and The Roots, she also introduced us to Little Sophia”.
Little Sophia is a miniature robot with the same quick wit and facial expressions as Sophia, but potentially available to consumer markets. “Just go to HansonRobotics.com to see how I’m doing” says the robot. A quick look shows an announcement that Little Sophia will be “available to come into your home” as soon as 2019.
What could be next?
I think it’s fair to say Sophia has broken enough ground already, but what the future holds for her is yet to be seen.
How will she increase the ever-changing inter-connectivity between man and robot?
What could she do to increase awareness of advanced technologies and educate newer generations of the awesomeness of robotics?
Where will her travels take her next, where she will inevitable become “the first robot to…” as many things as physically possible!
Unfortunately, we will have to wait and see, although if she carries on at the current rate, it may only be another couple of months before I am writing about her again!
